Middle English baliste "crossbow, ballista," borrowed from Latin ballista, bālista "ballista," borrowed from Greek ballistḗs, presumably "thrower, military engine" (attested only as the name of a constellation in an astrological manuscript), agent derivative of ballízein "to throw, hurl".
